Many peptide products sold online are labeled "for research use only" (RUO) or "not for human consumption." This labeling is often used to attempt to avoid regulatory oversight, but it does not provide legal protection when products are marketed or sold for human use.

Regulatory Framework

The FDA considers a product to be a "drug" based on its intended use, not its label. If a product is marketed with health claims, sold alongside usage instructions, or promoted in contexts that imply human consumption, the RUO label does not exempt it from drug regulations.

Products labeled RUO are frequently:
