Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are naturally occurring molecules that form part of the innate immune system across virtually all living organisms. With the growing crisis of antibiotic resistance, AMPs have attracted significant research attention as potential alternatives to conventional antibiotics.
Most AMPs kill bacteria through membrane disruption:
1. Cationic AMPs are attracted to negatively charged bacterial membranes
2. They insert into the lipid bilayer
3. Pore formation or membrane destabilization leads to cell death
4. Some AMPs also target intracellular processes (DNA, protein synthesis)
Several AMPs are in clinical trials for topical infections, wound healing, and oral mucositis. No systemic AMP antibiotic has yet received FDA approval, though topical applications are closer to market.
